What are deck tiles?
Deck tiles are an easy way to repave your patio or poolside easily and cost-effectively. Most deck tiles are easy to maintain and provide years of enjoyment with little to no maintenance.
Both composite and wood deck tiles are versatile, easy to set up, and look amazing! They can instantly transform your outdoor space and can be used anywhere around your home from your patio or deck, to bathrooms, showers, mudrooms, and anywhere in between. Not only do they look great, but they are easy to maintain, last a very long time (you rarely have to replace them), and any major scratches can be sanded out if they are made of solid wood. Most patio tiles and deck tiles use an interlocking system, so you just snap the pieces together and don’t need any extra glue or tools required.
When reviewing various deck tiles we looked for:
- UV Resistance: to help retain the color of the tiles through hot summers
- Anti-Slip: especially useful if you’re planning to pave these around your pool
- Durability: overall build quality and manufacturing consistency
- Mold & Mildew Resistance: a nice to have feature to ensure the wood is properly treated
- Ease of Installation: screwless and snap/click installation
- Customizability: trim and transition options, as well as the ability to cut tiles to fit surroundings.
Installing tiles on your deck or patio?
These interlocking deck tiles should be installed on a hard flat surface for the best results. Water drains through the bottom of these wood tiles as there is a plastic backing holding them together. Installation is as easy as putting together lego, no tools are required. Each side of the tiles contains plastic connectors, which are well made.
As these are made of real wood, we have used a saw to cut pieces to fit around various obstacles and surroundings for previous projects. We’ve never tried cutting any pieces ourselves, but the plastic backing looks easy to work with. Other users have also installed these in their shower room, pathways, and saunas.
How to maintain wood deck tiles?
The manufacturer recommends using teak oil once per year. They also sell their own brand of teak oil, which we purchased. Teak oil penetrates deep into the wood to protect it from weathering. For weathered teak, it is recommended to clean thoroughly before applying the oil. After the teak oil is applied, it will give your tiles a natural golden color while enhancing the natural wood grain.
How much do you need to buy?
Calculating the number of tiles you need is fairly easy. Each of the two styles above come in boxes of 10, which covers 10 square feet. If you’re off by a few, you can always purchase single tiles, transitions, and/or end pieces to create a nice border around your new flooring.
1 box = 10 tiles (12 inches by 12 inches each tile)
Patio Dimensions | Patio Area | Boxes Required |
---|---|---|
3′ x 4′ | 12 Sq Ft | 2 Boxes |
3′ x 10′ | 30 Sq Ft | 3 Boxes |
4′ x 10′ | 40 Sq Ft | 4 Boxes |
9′ x 9′ | 81 Sq Ft | 9 Boxes |
12′ x 20′ | 240 Sq Ft | 24 Boxes |
If you’re between boxes, you can purchase single tiles to make up the difference.

FAQ’s
Can these tiles be used on grass or dirt?
You can use these tiles temporarily on grass, however, if you leave them there long enough, they will sink into the dirt. As most lawns and dirt is not a flat surface, the tiles are more prone to buckling and can cause some of the connections to break, which can be a tripping hazard. Overall, we would not recommend using on grass or dirt.
Can the tiles be cut?
Yes! Other customers usually recommend using a jigsaw or wood saw. This is perfect for angling around a non-symmetrical edge, or to surround an object. We recommend buying a few extra pieces if you’re considering cutting any of them.
